The Risks and Rewards of Specializing in a Niche as an IT Consultant

As an IT consultant, one of the biggest decisions you'll face is whether to specialize in a specific niche or remain a generalist. On one hand, specializing can bring higher earnings, greater efficiency, and a stronger reputation in your chosen area of expertise. On the other hand, it can also limit your opportunities, make you vulnerable to changes in the market, and even render your skills obsolete as AI and automation continue to advance.

Specialization pays off.
Talent is underrated.

In this post, we'll weigh the advantages of specializing against the potential drawbacks, and provide guidance on how to make an informed decision for your business.

The Advantages of Specializing

Specializing in a niche can bring numerous benefits, including:

  •  Higher Earnings: By developing deep expertise in a specific area, you can command higher rates from clients who are willing to pay a premium for your specialized knowledge.

  •  Greater Efficiency: As you work on more projects within your niche, you'll develop a deeper understanding of the common challenges and solutions, allowing you to complete projects faster and with greater accuracy.

  •  Stronger Reputation: I can attest to this personally. 15 years ago, I became a well-known niche specialist in a product that I picked up after the "death" of SharePoint (it didn't die, it dwindled away into SaaS from on-premises and artisan coding). This guaranteed that I and two other consultants who had the same skillset divided the projects in our economic area, which comprised around a 3 million inhabitant region. By focusing on a specific area, you can build a reputation as a go-to expert, attracting clients who are seeking specialized knowledge and skills.

The Drawbacks of Specializing

However, specializing also has its downsides, including:

  • Limited Opportunities: By limiting your focus to a single niche, you may miss out on other opportunities that fall outside your area of expertise.

  • Vulnerability to Market Changes: If you specialize in an area that becomes obsolete or experiences a decline in demand, you may find yourself struggling to adapt and stay relevant. For example, I personally experienced this when I focused on SharePoint from 2003-2010, until it slowly dwindled away and withered. Note that a product may become obsolete for a consultant, not a company, if the product is changed in a fundamental way, like happened with many products in the 2010’s as they went from on-premise or artisan coding approach to SaaS.

  • Risk of Obsolescence: As AI and automation continue to advance, certain niches may become increasingly automated, rendering your specialized skills less valuable.

The Changing Landscape of IT Consulting

In today's rapidly changing landscape of IT consulting, it's essential to consider the impact of technological advancements on your niche. "are many products which 15 years ago were not saas and now they are" - this shift has fundamentally changed the way consultants work with these products.

The specialist.
There are a lot of things AI cannot do. Specialize.

A Personal Experience

I can attest to the benefits of specialising in a niche. After SharePoint dwindled away, I picked up another product and became a well-known specialist in my geographical region. This guaranteed a steady stream of projects and a strong reputation in my area of expertise.
